24/03/2024

Dear runners,
what a record! 62 thousand people gathered in Piazza Duomo and ran through the streets of Milan, on March 24th, for the 51st edition of Stramilano: a blue wave that enjoyed a day of sport and togetherness. The half marathon also set a record with 8.000 participants competing in an unprecedented 21 km route from Piazza Castello.

The Half Marathon started the day at 8:30 a.m. For the men, Kimtai Antony, from Kenya, dominated the race (1:00:31), followed by Towett Vincent Kimutai (1:00:41) and Waithira Simon Mwangi (1:00:43). The victory for the women cathegory went to Genaneh Anchinalu Dessie from Ethiopia (1:07:55), followed by Michira Morine Gesare (1:08:13) and Parlov Kostro Matea (1:11:14).

Amazing placement for the Italians: Elisa Palmero placed 4th overall and first among the Italian women, while Francesco Guerra closed the men top10!

At 9.30 a.m., the traditional firing of the Historical Cannon of the Horse Artillery Regiment – fired by Jessica Brugali, radio presenter and patroness of this edition, and by Martina Riva, the Councillor for Sport, Tourism and Youth Policies – and the performance of the Army and Carabinieri Fanfares marked the start of the 10 km race. This year, for the first time, the protagonists were also the dogs, who had the opportunity to accompany their masters along the route and rest at the dedicated refreshment points; at the finish line, experts were also waiting for them for valuable nutritional advices. Finally, at 10.00 a.m., the young runners of the Stramilanina, the 5 km mini race, set off, accompanied by their parents, grandparents, friends and teachers!

All the runners finally came together at the famous “Arco della Pace” for a moment of relax, fun and entertainment thanks to the acrobatic exhibition of the Carabinieri Sports Centre Parachutists who jumped from a helicopter, landing to the enthusiasm and amazement of the participants.

Along the route, the refreshment and sponging points helped the athletes to maintain the sprint necessary to give their best; the students of the Milan Conservatory entertained the runners with their music, while the LiberiDi entertainment company provided magical moments with their acrobatic performances. The Athletes’ Village hosted the refreshment area run by Italian Red Cross of Milan, inside which there was also an area dedicated to relaxing massages.

Stramilano has always supported various associations, including: Abio and Dutur Claun, which devote themselves to children in hospital, Cooperativa Sociale Fabula for the education of people with disabilities, Africa&Sport, Le Gocce, an association that helps differently abled children, City Angels, the street angels who help homeless and needy citizens, and Bistari Bistari Kalika, which works in Nepal.

Mark your calendars for the next big event: the 2nd edition of “Stramilano Sottozero” will take place on December 1st, 2024! If you can’t wait for Stramilano 2025, see you on March 23rd, 2025, for the 52nd edition! Don’t miss them!
