Expectations are rising for the 49th Stramilano, presented to the press today, which will be held on the streets of Milan on Sunday 15 May after a two-year stop due to the pandemic. The most famous and best-loved race is aiming to reach 50,000 participants this year, to match the number of participants from the pre-Covid years.
“We needed the return of the Stramilano, it is a race that was missing, very Milanese, suitable for everyone,” commented the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala.
“It is with great emotion that we celebrate the return of Stramilano, which has wisely decided to wait until the end of the state of emergency to call everyone – Milanese, Lombardy and non – to resume good, healthy habits” stressed the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, in a video message of greeting.
As per tradition, the race will be divided into three major events: Stramilano 10 km, Stramilanina 5 km and Stramilano Half Marathon. At 8.30 a.m. the first to start from Piazza Duomo will be the participants in the Stramilano 10 km, the non-competitive race in which runners of all ages and levels run through the city’s most characteristic streets. At 9.30 am, again from Piazza Duomo, the Stramilanina will start, where the protagonists will be the youngest runners, who will run 5 km through the historic centre of Milan with their parents. The finish line is set for everyone at the “Gianni Brera” Civic Arena. Finally, at 10.00 am the Stramilano Half Marathon will start and finish in Piazza Castello, where thousands of professional athletes and marathon enthusiasts will test themselves by running at a fast pace over the classic 21.097 km distance.
“A lot of registrations are coming in these days, and we have just started. On 11th May we will open the Stramilano Centre in the Duomo and people will come to sign up” – explained Stramilano president Michele Mesto on the sidelines of the presentation, recalling that this year the event’s patroness will be sports journalist Giorgia Rossi, who was also present at the meeting.
